Girl who drank the moon, 5 stars
I read it, and it was pretty amazing. First off, it wasn't quite what I expected-I was expecting more of a kid's book. Did SLJ give it grades 4-6 just because there's nothing "inappropriate" in it? It could certainly be enjoyed by more advanced readers in that age range, but there's more layers to get for those who are older. It's not lightweight, although there is plenty of humor; the story is complex, and the themes are subtle. It's the kind of book that at the end you want to cry a little, but not in a bad way, and just sit with it and absorb it. It's about magic, and love, and loss. The story is nourishing and heartwarming. I'm not surprised it won the Newbury.
I recommend whole-heartedly for the Isinglass. And also for parents and adults who enjoyed Naomi Novik's Uprooted. Also, I'm so glad I read this. -Katherine/Belmont

We invite you to comment on these nominations. Please click on a title of a book that you wish to discuss and you will come to a discussion page. Click the tab that says "Edit this page" and begin typing your comments. Please include your name and library-if you only want to put your first name, that's fine. After you have finished, hit "Save." We especially welcome your input in terms of whether you think the book will appeal to teens in grades 9-12, or 7-8, whether it appeals to boys and girls, and how it compares to other works of the same genre. If it is part of a series, please say whether you think the book stands alone. Also, please let us know if you think it should or should not be on the "final 10" nominated list.
In the past, the selection committee has chosen to include titles that also appear on the Isinglass list. The committee recognizes that a book can appeal to both age groups.
UPDATE: When you click on a title, you will get to the discussion page for that book. The title on the discussion page is linked to its NHU PAC entry, where you can see the book's cover and read reviews if you wish.
UPDATE: As the Flume and Isinglass committees (and wikis!) are being combined, I am marking each book with an F and/or an I to designate whether (according to reviewing media) it appears to be most appropriate for the Flume, the Isinglass or both. Feel free to add your own comments! -Katherine

    This Savage Song - maybe
I am working on this one at the moment, and enjoying it so far. Fantasy/dystopia. Seems to be a classic storyline of girl and boy from opposing sides meet and fall in love and heal the division. (Or at least that's what I'm assuming will happen.) It's not the most original of the type I've read, but it's original enough that I'm not bored. It's interesting, well written, and I'm invested in the characters. On the other hand, I have a feeling there may be stronger fantasy/dystopian candidates for the short list. -Katherine, Belmont Public
